Bioballs vs Lava Rock:

• Bioballs provide alternate biological media to Lava rock. Due to the nature of its surface, Lava rock are difficult to clean and hence lose their effectiveness over a period of time. Bioballs are much easier to clean and are useable for longer periods.
• The Paddle wheel design breaks water flow helping in aeration.
• Bioballs are much lighter than Lava rock and hence easier to handle.

General Maintenance and Recommendations:

• Ensure that the filter is placed close to the edge of the basin so that the pond liner can be connected to the filter.
• DO NOT clean the filter mats or filter media bag in the Filter more than once a year. Cleaning them, especially with chlorinated tap water, more than once-a-year will reduce or kill the beneficial bacteria growing on these filters. Replace old filter mats after several years when they begin to tear or fall apart.
• Power tools must not be used for installing the screws on the unit as it may strip the nut inserts.
• The BioFalls unit should be level from side-to-side and tilt forward to make sure the water comes over the front of the BioFalls and covers the entire spillway.
