Step by Step guide to clean metal wall light fixtures

While Light fixtures add that wow factor to the space, they are also attract dust, bugs, cobwebs, and dirt. In addition, outdoor lights are exposed to several environmental conditions, such as pollution, rainfall, salty air etc.

The discolouration of metal fixtures is due to an unavoidable natural phenomenon called Oxidation. In the case of Copper, Brass and Bronze surfaces, Tarnishing due to oxidation results in formation of a bluish green layer on the surface. While for Stainless Steel, this is usually referred as Tea Staining and forms a dull, non-reflective layer on the product. In both cases this reduces the shine of the fixture. However, it can easily be removed and more importantly does not affect the strength of the unit.

Oxidation of metal surfaces is more visible near coastal areas and regular maintenance will help to keep your light fixtures look brand new for a very long time. We recommend cleaning your metal light fixtures twice a year with simple steps outlined below, which will remove a light layer of metal from its surface, making it bright & shiny once again.

  • The light fixture must be turned off before cleaning.
  • For fixtures that uses bulbs other than LED, wait for a few minutes for the bulb to cool off before cleaning.
  • To remove staining on Copper, Bronze, Brass or Stainless Steel fixtures, apply paste made from equal portions of baking soda and white vinegar to the surface of the fixture. Apply using clean microfibre cloth in soft circular movements and minimal pressure. Leave for 5-10min and wipe off with a dampened soft cloth.

Care must be taken to avoid chemical cleaners, such as those containing ammonia or alcohol (for example, glass cleaner or general-purpose cleaners), as these dull the metal surface.

  • Once fully dry, polish the fixture with some WD40 or car wax to maintain the shine and extend time required between cleans.
  • Reassemble your shiny metal wall light.

TIP: Using warm (yellowish) light reduces the number of bugs your fixtures will attract, while still being functional and helping us feel relaxed.

A guide to help you choose your exterior lights:

Exterior lights are crucial as they help to extend our indoor living area into less utilised outdoor space while also adding that additional function of Security. Hence it is important to choose a good quality exterior light in order to spend more time enjoying it.

Below we have briefly explained some of the most important parameters that you will need to consider for choosing your lights.

  • Ingress Protection (IP) rating

This is one of the most important aspect for an exterior light. This value specifies degree of protection against external environmental elements such as moisture, dust, and vermin. The first digit denotes protection against the intrusion of foreign solid objects such as dust while the second digit indicates the level of protection against the ingress of water and moisture. A good quality high-end outdoor light will have an IP rating of 65 and higher.

  • Style: Recessed or Surface Mounted

This attribute of the light needs to be decided based on one’s personal preference. Both options have their own set of pros & cons. While recessed lights may look more elegant and are seated flushed to the surface, they may be difficult to install. These types of wall lights will need a cavity on the surface for installation and hence will possibly limit your options for future changes. Surface mounted lights on the other hand can be simply screwed on the wall and thus a much easier installation.

  • Material of construction

Outdoor lights are exposed to several environmental conditions, such as pollution, rainfall, salty air etc. Hence the choice of materials used to construct the light fittings plays an important role in this regard. Some of the well proven material used in good quality light fittings are:

-          Brass, Cooper & Bronze: High corrosion & weather resistance

-          Aluminium: light weight and malleable.

-          Stainless Steel: Effectively reflects light making it appear very bright. SS-304 is the less expensive grade but less corrosion resistant than SS-316 variant.

  • Voltage: 12v or 240v

12V systems are DIY in nature and the only time an electrician would be needed would be in the event you need to install a new power point to plug your transformer in. However, 240V installations can only be done by a certified electrician. Please note that using 12V system does not necessarily mean that it user lower power. This is determined by Wattage (W).

  • Lumens (Lm)

A lumen is a measure of the amount of brightness of a lightbulb -- the higher the number of lumens, the brighter the lightbulb. Hence understand if the unit comes with an integrated light bulb or a replaceable globe, and choose the bulb based on how you well-lit would you like the space to be.

  • Colour Temperature (K)

This value specifies the colour or appearance of the light and is measured on the Kelvin (K) in scale of 1,000 to 10,000 from warm to cool. A value between 2,700 and 3,200K denotes warm or yellowish coloured light (ideal for bedrooms and garden), while that between 3,200 and 5,000k represents cool toned lights (mostly used in Kitchen) and those above 5,000k are for bright daylight kind of colour (good for bathrooms and study).

  • Globe type

While LED lights may be relatively more expensive to purchase than its counterpart Halogen lights, it lasts considerably longer and consumes less power. Hence, saving money on the long run.
