What does it mean when a hose is “braided”?
Knitted or Braided Flexible watering hoses are composed of an inner tubular layer and an external tubular layer made of polymer material, not necessarily of the same type. Interposed between the two layers is a knitted reinforcement layer for enhanced mechanical characteristics such as the resistance to bursting, the flexibility or the capacity to avoid the kinking phenomenon, i.e., the tendency of the hoses to be crushed when subjected to twisting. The knitted reinforcement layer is wound on the inner layer and a series of yarns are then spiral wound on the inner layer & knitted layer together to form a mesh, increasing the strength and durability of the hose.
Hose thickness, Number of braid wires, Diameter of braid wires, Braid angle (the angle that the braid wires run around the hose) and Braid coverage (how much of the hose is covered by braid) are few of the important criterion that determines the Pressure rating and other mechanical characteristics of a hose.
How to extend the life of your garden hose?
These simple easy to do tips can extend the life of your garden hose by many years.
Turning off the water tap when the garden hose is not in use:
Most good quality hose connectors will withhold pressure after removing the watering device for shorter periods. These are designed to do so in order to save wastage of water during switching devices or while you are walking back to your tap to turn it off. However, this is not advisable for prolonged periods. Leaving the water turned on while not being used could lead to ruptured hose while unattended. To relieve the constant pressure during prolonged use, we recommend usage of timer unit before the garden hose. Click here for Tap timer options.
Draining water left inside the hose after use:
Hoses are outdoor units and can certainly be stored outside if all the water from inside the hose has been drained out. This ensures that the hose won't split when any residual water freezes on a frosty night or heats up under hot sun.
Appropriate storage:
The primary reason hoses get tangled and compressed has a lot to do with how they’re stored. We recommend collecting and storing the hose either on a hose reel or in large loops on a hook. This not only helps to kinking at bay and drains out remaining water within the hose but also prevents accidental trip hazards that may happen while not in use.
