What are advantages of continually operating a pond pump, even during rain and winter?
Most likely your garden pond is one of the key features of your garden. However, it is important to note that a pond is more than just a decorative feature, and that it is utmost essential to maintain the health of the water body.
We often get asked if one should run the pump continually, even during rain. As a general rule, we recommend our customers to run their pond pumps rain or shine. If worried, you may turn off the pump during lightning. Although it may be tempting to shut off a pond pump to save electrical expense, one must know that pond that is in motion remains healthy and will be capable to support all the plants and animals that live in and around it.
- Pond aeration – Higher levels of dissolved oxygen in the pond water enables the beneficial bacterial to appropriately cycle nutrients. Continual operation of the pond pump will assist with aerating the pond water.
- Limit organic matter in your pond – While beneficial bacteria break down the dead organic matter and debris in the pond, having too much of it will result in them not being able to decompose it quickly enough.
