What are the Important factors to consider before setting up a new pond?

Pond owner needs are very individual, dependent upon specific preferences and resources (space, budget, time etc.). Added to this is the unlimited options available with water. We have listed below the top few criteria that will point you in the right direction towards finalising your setup.

Location, Size & Shape of the pond

  • Will the pond be in a shaded location or will be largely open to direct sunlight? Although a great picnic location, a pond that receives larger periods of direct sunlight will have a higher possibility of algae bloom in the pond water and will require regular care.
  • Does the surrounding area near the pond has or will have large plants or trees? Care must be taken to appropriately lining the pond to prevent leaks due to protruding roots and skim out fallen leaves or twigs to prevent build of organic material in the pond.
  • Will the location have access to a power point? Low Voltage units will need to be opted for ponds that will be located further than 7-8m from the nearest power point.
  • Will the location have easy access to water source?
  • The shape and size of the pond will largely depend on the space available to you and the picture of the pond in your mind. However, it is best to choose pond shape that does not impede the movement of water within the pond, such as square corners should be avoided where possible.

We recommend you to draw the outline of the pond (using spray paint or chalk powder) of your planned shape & size at the exact location where you intend to build. This will help you visualise the ambience and end result better.

Application

  • Do you plan to have pond animals, like Fish or Turtle, in your pond? If yes, please research on recommended number within a given area for your shortlisted species. Pond animals need oxygen dissolved in the water to survive. Hence the water quality must be within defined limits to support a healthy aquatic life. Same also applies for aquatic plants, if you plan to have them. Ensure that not more than 15-20% of the pond surface is allocated to the plants.
  • Do you wish to have a waterfall or fountain water feature in your pond? These are great ways to aerate the pond water and preventing water stagnation with circulation.
  • How deep should your pond to be? Answer to this depends on whether or not you plan to have aquatic life or a water feature. Although tempting, don’t make your pond too shallow. Deeper water will allow your fish to stay cooler during the hotter weather. If your pond is too shallow, the water can heat up quickly during hot summer weather, which will be dangerous for aquatic life. Moreover, shallow ponds will also need to be topped up regularly during summer due to evaporation.
  • It is recommended to have shelved sections along the walls of the pond or at least one edge slopes gently. This is important as steep sides will make your excavation unstable and they also make it difficult and even dangerous for you to get in and out of your pond to perform maintenance tasks later on.

What are the must have Pond Equipment?

To maintain a clean, healthy and beautiful pond, you will need to the following equipment.

  • Pond Pump - Pumps are the lifeblood of any pond. They make a pond look attractive with a fountain and help create a healthy ecosystem. The type of pump needed for your pond will be based on the water the pump is needed to circulate. For instance, a solids handling pump will be needed for a pond that has larger number of aquatic life to handle solid waste up to 10-11mm in size.
  • Pond Filtration system - The high & low extremes of the climate, fish manure & decaying organic matter will cause stress on the water. A pond filter is a compact biological ecosystem which helps manage the health & clarity of the pond water by forcing the water through various filtration systems. It is effectively a very efficient sewage treatment plant for the pond. Most models of Pond filters come with an integrated ultra violet light module which helps to eliminate green suspended algae spores. If your pond filter does not include an integrated UV module, then a stand-alone UV Clarifier (UVC) will also be needed.

Other optional add-ons that you may need depending upon your set up and use are:

  • Pond Aeration System - Aeration helps keep the water clean and provides oxygen for any aquatic life that you may have in the pond. This is accomplished by moving the surface of the water which in turn also helps to reduce algae growth. These are external pumps that disburse much needed oxygen into deepest sections of the pond via air stone.
  • Pond Vacuum – These are used to eliminate sludge, excess fish feed and decaying manure will assist the health of a fishpond with minimum effort. This is important in well stocked koi ponds. Fish net could also be used to scoop out leaves and any uneaten fish food.
  • Pond Skimmer – You can make it easier on yourself and automate the removal of leaves and other large debris with the use of pond skimmers. It must be noted that pond skimmers are only designed to catch the larger debris, therefore preventing the growth of algae and bacteria. They will not be able to treat the water the way a filter can and hence are not a replacement for Pond Filter.
  • Fountain kit - These come in a number of different styles and are most likely be included with your pump. This is one of the absolute best ways to aerate a pond as the pump will propel the water up and break the surface of the pond water on its descent.
  • Pond Light - Underwater lights installed in a pond extends the enjoyment of the pond beyond the daylight hours. In addition to adding aesthetics, installing lights will help you see the pond edges so that there is a lower risk of falling in!
  • Liquid or granular treatment - UV clarifiers are ineffective against string algae. For major algae problems or persistent algae such as string-algae you may need to use a liquid or granulated treatment.

At Rock Around The Block you will find all the above equipment from multiple renowned national & international brands, along with their accessories and spare parts for a hassle free pond installation and ongoing maintenance
