What are the benefits of Garden Arches?

  • In most cases, a garden arch serves as a point of entrance or welcome point. However, it can also be used to divide the garden into sections.
  • A garden arch is a perfect way to create a stylish focal point in your garden.
  • It adds height to your outdoor area by allowing you to have plants at different levels – a change from the usual ground level flower beds.
  • It can provide a shaded area for you to retreat in your outdoor space.

How should a Garden Arch be installed?

Garden arches once installed correctly will most likely last a lifetime. Once installed and set up with your favourite climbers, it will be extremely inconvenient to redo or strengthen their foundations later. Hence, it is utmost important to get this task done right the very first time.

For most of Garden Arch structures, all necessary bolts and fixing necessary to assemble the unit will be included in your package. However, you may need to buy the required fixtures to attach the unit to the ground or a wall. Anchoring the garden arch’s base on a concrete foundation is the most common practice to install the arch. This is not a specialised or complex task and can easily be completed by two people with reasonable DIY skills. You may also choose to engage a landscaper or handyman for a stress-free installation.

The steps to anchor an arch to a concrete foundation are as outlined below:

  • Measure the distance between the Garden Arches’ base that need to be secured to the ground.
  • Identify and mark the location in your yard where you wish to install the arch, taking into consideration the dimensions of the unit.
  • Dig holes in the ground corresponding to the points that needs to be secured. Ensure that each hole is about 1m (100cm) deep and 25-30cm in diameter.
  • Place a PVC pipe of 25cm-30cm diameter in each hole corresponding to each anchor point. It is best to ensure that the pipes sit 2-3cm below the ground so that they are not visible once the arch is installed.
  • Fill each PVC pipe with approximately 10-15cm of gravel for drainage and fill the remaining depth of the pipe with concrete mix. As a general practice, stir the pourer concrete using a bar to remove any trapped air bubbles.
  • Allow the concrete to set for a few days as recommended in the pack. A fast setting Rapid-Set cement could also be used for faster installations.
  • Assemble the garden arch, whilst the structure is lying on the ground, by following the instructions illustrated in the user manual. Once fully assembly and position the Garden Arch’s base into the concrete filled holes.
  • Screw each anchor point of the Garden Arch’s structure to the concrete using outdoor rated Stainless Steel fasteners and screws that are readily available in DIY hardware stores.
  • Use a spirit level to confirm that the that arch structure is fully vertical prior to final tightening of the fasteners.

Which flowering plants give a welcoming look on a Garden Arch?

Using the combination of Garden Arch with some gorgeous climbers is a perfect way to transform your yard.

  • Jasmine: This fast-growing evergreen climber has creamy white flowers with the most heavenly sweet scent.
  • Nasturtium: These easy to grow, vigorous climbing plants are one of the best flowering vines. With highly appealing, colorful flowers and green leaves, this vine resembles a stunning painting.
  • Bougainvillea: This sun-loving dense vining plant will add colour burst to your yard with its papery flowers that come in electric pink or purple.
  • Wisteria: For gardens that are fortunate enough to be bathed in sunlight for much of the spring and summer, Wisteria is an ideal climber for your arch. If placed in full sun, Wisteria will bloom in shades ranging between purple, blue and white.
  • Mandevillas: This bright red, white or pink beauties bear masses of trumpet shaped blooms during all summer.
  • Climbing Roses: This plant will need to be trained to grow along a vertical support, but once established its gorgeous flower will be the most preferred backdrop for any family picture (has been ours for a while).
