Preparing your Garden for Spring

Organise your garden shed:

Check all your garden tools, pruners, axes, saws, garden scissors and even things like garden hoses, reel for hoses, your watering guns and lastly your lawn mower.

Check if they are in working order. Especially tools with moving parts, like the secateur pruners or garden snips and scissors.

Make sure they are dust free and in working order. It wouldn’t hurt to apply some machine oil or grease on the moving parts. Little bit of oiling will go a long way when you’re using the tool in spring and then in summer months.

Also keep a tab on your fertilizer and other soil nutritional supplies. Certain supplies tend to be cheaper in off peak season, so get in early and it may save you some dollars.

Clean & weed:

Before you start to remove the dead leaves, it’s a good idea to pull the weeds out. That way you can clean and remove all the waste together and dispose.

When pulling out weeds try to uproot them rather than just cutting them off.

Use good tools to pull weeds, for e.g., Fiskars weed puller is a great tool for uprooting the hard-set weeds, with little effort. Use our variety of digging and weeding tool to tackle this as it helps to get this done now rather later as the weeds would get be bigger and stronger in warmer months. Once you are done with the weeds then start to clear out the dead leaves and branches.

If you are planning to compost the dead weeds, make sure you place them in the middle of the compost so that they don’t grow back out.

Start pruning:

Late winter or early spring is the perfect time prune dead branches and stems. Before you start to prune, make sure that the blades as clean. Remember, use an Anvil pruner or Anvil lopper, like the Fiskars Anvil Pruner P941 or Fiskars Anvil Lopper L31, for dead stems and branches and use a bypass pruner or lopper for fresh branches and stems, like the Fiskars Bypass Pruner P961 or Fiskars Bypass lopper LX92.

Lawn Mowing:

It may be a good idea to give the grasses a fresh start by doing a layer of mowing as the lawn would have many dead threads of grass and it’s a good idea to get rid of them. Make sure that the lawn is not overly wet and try doing this on sunny day for best results. Push lawn mower, like the Fiskars MaxReel mower, are good way to give your grass the clean cut they deserve. Unlike motorized lawn mower, manual lawn mowers are not only great for the environment, but they also give a scissor like cut due to their rotary cylinder blade technology. The Fiskars lawn mower is one of the best in the world when it comes to push reel mowers.

Planting:

Get in early is the best strategy as the soil is wet and the seeds needs that in the early stages. The ‘not so hot’ sunshine during late winter months, form the perfect conditions for the seeds to develop. So don’t miss this critical time window for planting your new seeders or plants

Get ready for the season:

Remember to utilise the remaining cooler and wetter days of winter to clean up and start preparing for your warmer months as once it’s warmer the growing part of plants begin, and you may have missed a critical window of opportunity for a perfect garden!
