What plants look great on a Plant shelf?

Here are some suggestions that not just look great but also do not require much maintenance.

  • Peace Lily: One of the most popular indoor plants for both home or office (or home offices). If placed to receive indirect light, it will produce lovely white spade-shaped flowers. Never overwater. Place it on the top tier of your shelf if you (like me) have a furry friend to take care of, as Peace lilies are toxic to cats and to dogs.
  • Pothos: This ever-green easy-care vining plant with heart shaped leaves looks outstanding when they cascade down from the pot. This virtually pest and disease-free plant is great for low light indoors and can be grown in water or dry soil.
  • Anthurium: The bright red heart shaped flowers of Anthurium are one of the longest lasting flowers on the planet. This means that this happiness inspiring flower will add dazzling colors to your room for months. Anthurium loves humid environments, so feel free to mist every day.
  • Lucky bamboo: An ever-green power plant, well known in feng shui to not only draw peaceful energy, but also to attract luck and health. It can be planted in water or soil and prefers bright filtered light (avoid direct sunlight).
  • Snake Plant: The eye-catching sword-like, dark green leaves of this draught tolerant plant make it a common houseplant choice for many. Also called the mother-in-law’s tongue, snake plants are known for both looking good and for improving air quality. It is one of the few plants that can convert carbon dioxide into oxygen at night.
  • Cacti & Succulents: Evolved to store water for survival, these fleshy plants can overcome tough climates and soil conditions. Always use coarse, sandy soil that drains very well for succulents. Some of the most popular succulents are:
    • Jade Plant’s (Crassula ovata) thick trunk with shiny plump leaves makes this succent an old-time favourite. With easy grow habits, it is one of the prettiest succulents.
    • Zebra Plant’s (Zebra haworthia) hard, leathery surface makes it downright hard to kill and are favourites for shallow bowls.
    • Aloe Vera has been cultivated for centuries for its beauty and medicinal benefits. The juice in its thick leaves is used for treating minor wounds, acne, skin irritations and sunburn.
    • Donkey’s tail (or Burro’s tail) is a trailing succulent and looks lovely draping over the sides of the planter or in a hanging basket.
    • Blue chalk sticks’ foliage is a most distinctive shade of frosted blue. Prune back hard in late Winter to Early Spring (later in cooler areas) to encourage fresh dense growth.

Please check your local regulations before you buy a cactus as growing certain invasive cacti variants is illegal in some Australian states.
