Bioballs vs Lava Rock:

• Bioballs provide alternate biological media to Lava rock. Due to the nature of its surface, Lava rock are difficult to clean and hence loose their effectiveness over a period of time. Bioballs are much easier to clean and are useable for much longer periods.
• The Paddle wheel design breaks water flow helping in aeration.
• Bioballs are much lighter than Lava rock and hence easier to handle.

General Maintenance:

• DO NOT clean the filter mats or filter media bag in the Filter more than once a year. Cleaning them, especially with chlorinated tap water, more than once-a-year will reduce or kill the beneficial bacteria growing on these filters. Replace old filter mats after several years when they begin to tear or fall apart.
