  • It is necessary to ensure that the compressor unit has a ventilated enclosure to protect it from the elements.

What are the most common types of Aeration systems?

  • Mechanical aeration operates from the surface of a tank or lagoon. Older models of aeration systems are often mechanical systems. Paddle wheel aerators are very common in large ponds. These units usually powered by an electric motor and are mounted to a float while being anchored to the pond edge.
  • Surface spray aerators throw water droplets through the air. The droplets trap atmospheric oxygen molecules and fall to the surface releasing Dissolved Oxygen (DO) into the water. Floating fountain heads are the most common examples of surface spray aerators. This type of aeration is typically best in shallow water (ponds 1.8m to 2m deep or shallower).
  • Diffused aeration is a process where air is driven down a tube and released through a diffuser at the bottom of the basin. The air bubbles are slowly absorbed / dissipated as they rise to the surface. Air bubbles rise to the surface at 1ft (30cm) per second; The efficiency of diffused-air systems is primarily a function of bubble size and diffuser depth. Diffusers that produce smaller bubbles, commonly referred to as fine-pore diffusers, are more efficient than diffusers that produce large or coarse bubbles. Smaller bubbles have more surface area relative to their volume, which facilitates more efficient oxygen transfer.

Additionally, when the bubbles are released at a greater depth, allow more contact time for the bubbles to diffuse oxygen into the water column as they rise to the surface. This means that diffuser Oxygen Transfer Rate (OTR) increases with depth.

Surface spray and diffused aeration are the most common type of aerators. It must also be noted that Mechanical aerators are typically the more expensive while fine bubble diffusers are the least expensive to operate.
